Up-close, detailed
images offer best opportunity for likeness in final painting
A professional photograph is always great to work from because of clarity,
proper lighting, shadow and intense color. In most cases, however, these quality
photographs are not always available. It is very important that the image
be taken at close range. When photos are taken at a distance details are
lost and it is these individual details that enable the artist to capture a true
likeness. Glare obscures details and red eye makes it necessary to consult
alternative reference. The photos need to portray the subject in a desirable
position and facial expression. Example: if a profile painting is desired,
then, a photo in that position is necessary. Black and white photos may work for
graphite renderings but do not give the artist enough information for color
work. Should you choose a pet portrait placed in its habitat or other
setting, reference can be designated and mailed to me along with the photos of
the pet. If you have an idea and do not have accompanying reference, I can
work with you on composition.
I do preliminary sketches called “thumbnails” and send the copies of these for
your approval. Once the contract is signed, thumbnails approved and finalized
and we are in agreement and everything has been returned to me, the real work
begins. Keep in mind that the thumbnails are roughs and the final portrait will
be based on the selected thumbnail. The finished portrait will reflect the
details and refinement the sketch lacks.
If a portrait is to have more than one subject, they can be super-imposed from
multiple photos. The subject(s) can be placed in special settings and can
include favored toys, and other objects associated with the pet(s). If the pet
is at peace and good quality photos are not available every possible effort will
be made to capture the pet.
Please do not send the photos over the internet as clarity and quality suffers
when printed in a low resolution printer. Your treasured photos will be returned
to you when the portrait is completed.
